Details
When a serious collection outgrows a closet conversion or a single cooler, the Le Cache Contemporary 5200 in Driftwood is the answer — a full-scale aging environment in furniture form. At 622 bottles total across double-deep racked slots and bulk stacking space, it holds the kind of depth — multiple vintages of Bordeaux, a serious Burgundy allocation, Napa library bottles — that smaller units simply can’t accommodate. The Driftwood finish, a soft weathered gray-white on Cherry veneer, reads cleanly against both light and dark millwork, making it equally at home in a finished basement, a dining room or a second-home great room.
The cabinet is built around long-term aging, not just short-term chilling. Foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation and sealed double-pane tinted glass protect against both temperature fluctuation and UV degradation. The CellarPro cooling unit — made in the USA and now available in its quietest ECX configuration — manages both temperature and humidity digitally, with adjustable humidity control, Energy-Saver and Quick-Chill modes and audible and visual alarms if conditions drift. SB/0® Technology allows the cabinet to sit flush against a wall with top-vent exhaust, eliminating the clearance and installation constraints that complicate most freestanding units. All-wood interlock racks hold standard and oversized bottles in 3.8-inch slots, and the interior LED keeps heat out of the equation when you’re pulling bottles.

What These Specs Mean
- Startup Amps: The compressor draws a large current surge the moment it starts; this number is used to confirm the electrical circuit can handle the brief load without tripping a breaker.
- Running Amps: The steady-state current draw during active cooling cycles; use this figure alongside the Thermal Load Calculator to estimate ongoing energy consumption.
- CellarPro Unit Variants (QTL / QT / XT): Three compatible cooling units with different efficiency and acoustic profiles. The 1800QTL-ECX has the lowest startup draw at 14.2 Amps and is the quietest option among the three.

Placement Requirements
PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS
POWER REQUIREMENT:
The power cord extends 6 1/2 feet from the rear of the cabinet. If an extension cord is used, it should be 14-gauge wire or thicker, grounded, and as short as possible.
The cooling unit plugs into a standard grounded wall outlet. We recommend adding a surge protector, rated at 15 amps or more (for example, click here), to protect the cooling unit from power surges.
The outlet must be on a dedicated circuit. The components of the cooling unit draw 3 amps, and the electric outlet on the side of the cooling unit also is rated for 3 amps. The cooling unit should not, under any circumstances, share a circuit with another motor or compressor-based appliance, like a wine cooler, fridge, air conditioner, or garage opener.
FLOOR SURFACE
Because of the significant weight of your wine cabinet, it is important that it be placed on a hard surface; otherwise, the cabinet may become skewed if the doors settle unevenly over time. If you will be placing your cabinet on thick carpeting, consider placing a carpet board underneath the wine cabinet. You can purchase a carpet board from Le Cache, or you can have your local hardware store cut a 3/4 inch plywood board to the following dimensions: 45w x 25d (inches).
DOOR SWING CLEARANCE
The doors of our wine cabinets swing wide by approximately 1 inch when open at 90 degrees. The additional width should be accounted for when purchasing cabinets that do not have moldings because the stated widths of our wine cabinets do not account for the door swing. Please note that the additional width is required in front of the cabinet.
WEIGHT LOAD FACTOR
After loading your wine cabinet with wine bottles, it will be extremely heavy. When selecting a location for your cabinet, make sure that the floor underneath is strong enough to support the weight of the cabinet.
TEMPERATURE REQUIREMENTS
CellarPro cooling units are designed to handle temperatures ranging from 50 to 95F.
VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS
The cooling unit generates hot air that must be exhausted in such a way that it won't be recirculated by the cooling unit. If the hot air cannot be dissipated or channeled properly, and the cooling unit is forced to recycle its own hot air, the cooling unit will be unable to maintain cold temperatures inside the wine cabinet and/or will overheat and/or will run all the time. Proper ventilation can be achieved in one of three ways:
- 1. UPRIGHT CABINETS WITH TOP-VENT CONFIGURATIONS
Our upright wine cabinets have been engineered with top-vent cooling units and SB/0 Technology so that they can be placed right up against the wall. In this configuration, the hot air generated by the cooling unit is ventilated through the top of the wine cabinet, and the return air comes from above the wine cabinet, so there must be clearance above and to the sides of the cabinets for the hot air to dissipate, as follows: - Contemporary wine cabinets, Carolina wine cabinets, Loft wine cabinets, Vault wine cabinets and a Semi-Custom wine cabinets require 18 inches of clearance above the wine cabinet.
- European Country wine cabinets and Mission wine cabinets require 12 inches of clearance above the wine cabinet.
- The sides always need to be open - in other words, placement in a corner, enclosed space, alcove, or closet will not work without our front-vent hood (see Configuration 3 below).
- 2. UPRIGHT CABINETS WITH Rear-Vent Configurations
Our upright wine cabinets can be configured so that the return air comes from behind the wine cabinet. This configuration is useful in situations where sufficient clearance around the wine cabinet doesn't exist. In this configuration: - If the rear of the wine cabinet is not accessible, a minimum clearance of 7 1/2 inches above the wine cabinet is required for removal and replacement of the cooling unit air filter.
- If the rear of the wine cabinet is accessible, a minimum clearance of 3 inches above the wine cabinet is required for proper airflow, and we recommend using our air deflector to direct the hot air exhaust to the left of the wine cabinet.
- In all cases, the wine cabinet must be placed 3-4 inches away from the rear wall.
- The sides always need to be open - in other words, placement in a corner, enclosed space, alcove, or closet will not work without our front-vent hood (see Configuration 3 below).
- 3. UPRIGHT CABINETS with Front-Vent Hoods
If you want to place the wine cabinet flush against the wall but you don't have the required clearance (as outlined in Configuration 1 above), or you want to place the wine cabinet in an enclosed space, closet, or alcove, our front-vent hood (placed on top of the wine cabinet) can be used with 7 1/2 inches of clearance above the wine cabinet for removal of the hood and the air filter. Please note: - Contemporary wine cabinets, Loft wine cabinets and Vault wine cabinets can use our front vent hood with OR without the decorative grill.
- European Country wine cabinets, Mission wine cabinets and Carolina wine cabinets can use our front vent hood without the decorative grill (the decorative grill will not fit with crown moldings).
4. CREDENZA WINE CABINETS
Credenza wine cabinets don't require any clearance above the wine cabinet; however, all credenzas require 3-4 inches of space behind the wine cabinet because all the ventilation (intake and exhaust) occurs behind the cabinet.

Please note:
(1) We count the top of the racks as 1 row when counting rows in our racks.
(2) Every slot in the racks is 3 3/4" and sized to fit oversized Burgundy and most Champagne-size bottles.
(3) Bulk storage is located atop the racks (except for the first row atop the racks). Bulk storage capacity is based on Bordeaux-size bottles.
(4) Total capacity is the sum of racked plus bulk capacity, with double-deep storage in all cases except the Contemporary Credenza (which is single-deep). Usable capacity may be lower by 2-3 bottles when the first few cells under the cooling unit are left empty for proper air circulation.
Q&A
Can the Le Cache Contemporary 5200 be placed flush against a wall, or does it need rear clearance?
A: Yes — the 5200 uses Le Cache’s SB/0™ Technology, which routes exhaust through a top vent rather than the back of the unit. That means the cabinet can sit flush against a wall with no rear clearance required. The overall footprint is 74" wide x 29" deep x 86" tall, so plan your space around those dimensions and allow adequate overhead clearance for the top-vent exhaust to dissipate heat properly.
What is the actual bottle capacity, and will it fit larger-format bottles like Burgundy or Bordeaux?
A: Total rated capacity is 622 bottles: 544 racked slots at 3.8-inch spacing plus approximately 78 bottles in bulk stacking space. The all-wood interlock racks use universal sizing that accommodates oversized bottles, including the wider shoulders of Burgundy-style bottles. If your collection runs heavily toward large-format or heavy Burgundy bottles, expect usable racked capacity to run somewhat below the 544-slot number.
Does the 5200 offer dual-zone temperature control for storing reds and whites at different temperatures?
A: No — the 5200 is a single-zone cabinet. It maintains one temperature throughout the interior, making it best suited for a cellar-temperature collection (typically 55–58°F) rather than simultaneous storage of reds and whites at their respective serving temperatures. The CellarPro cooling unit includes an electronic thermostat with digital display and adjustable humidity control, but all 622 bottles share the same environment.
What are the electrical requirements, and can it run on a standard household circuit?
A: The cabinet runs on 115V AC / 60 Hz, standard US household current. Startup (inrush) amperage is the key figure to check against your circuit: the CellarPro 1800QTL-ECX draws 14.2 startup amps, the 1800QT-ECX draws 20.1 amps and the 1800XT-ECX also draws 20.1 startup amps. A dedicated 20-amp circuit is strongly recommended for the QT and XT units. Running amps once the compressor is up are much lower: 2.4, 2.9 and 3.0 amps respectively.
What does the warranty cover, and how long does it last?
A: Le Cache provides a 2-year warranty on the entire cabinet and a separate 5-year warranty specifically on the CellarPro cooling unit. An optional extended warranty is also available for purchase. The cooling unit warranty being longer than the cabinet warranty reflects where long-term mechanical risk typically lies — the compressor-based refrigeration system rather than the wood cabinet structure.
How is this different from a wine cooler or refrigerator for long-term aging?
A: Wine coolers and refrigerators actively dehumidify the air, which over time dries out corks and accelerates oxidation — making them unsuitable for aging wine beyond a few years. The Le Cache 5200 includes adjustable humidity control to maintain proper cellar humidity alongside temperature, foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation for thermal stability and double-pane tinted glass for UV protection. These features combined make it a true long-term aging environment, not just a chilling appliance.

Bertha saves the day
by Chris
We bought this big boy (what my spouse and daughter refer to as Bertha) when we moved to Pleasant Hill from San Ramon. I had a wine cellar since we lived on the side of a hill, but lost it with the move. I needed a unit to store my 500 bottles. We bought "Bertha." With the warmer weather the refrig is running much of the time during the day when inside temp in the house is 78 degrees. I am not sure how they count to 622 bottles because I count 536 regular space provided. The new modern greyish color goes well with our decor. I am pleased with my purchase, but I have only had it for a month. So far so good.
