Details

When a collection has outgrown a kitchen cooler and deserves something that will actually protect it for the long term, the Le Cache Contemporary 1400 in Driftwood is the kind of cabinet that earns its floor space. At 72 inches tall and just 31 inches wide, it holds 172 bottles — 160 in individually racked slots sized for oversized bottles — while fitting comfortably in a dining room alcove, a finished basement or a second-home bar area. The weathered Driftwood finish on cherry wood veneer reads distinctly contemporary without demanding a particular aesthetic, and the gently arched double-pane tinted glass window lets the collection be seen without compromising thermal or UV protection.

What separates this cabinet from a wine cooler is its engineering for long-term aging. The CellarPro 1800-series cooling unit — made in the USA and available in three configurations — manages both temperature and humidity with a digital thermostat, adjustable humidity control and audible and visual alarms if conditions drift. Foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation and sealed seams hold a stable environment even in warmer ambient spaces. The SB/0 design places the top-vent exhaust at the roof, meaning the cabinet can sit flush against a wall without clearance gaps on the sides or rear. For a collection built on Bordeaux, Burgundy or Napa reds that need years to develop, these are the conditions that matter.

Best For

  • Storing 100–170 bottles in a dining room, finished basement or second home where floor space is limited but conditions must meet cellar standards
  • Aging structured reds — Bordeaux, Napa Cabernet, Northern Rhône — that need consistent temperature and humidity over several years
  • Collectors who want a freestanding cabinet that reads like furniture rather than an appliance in a visible living space

What These Specs Mean

  • Running vs. Startup Amps: The startup amp draw peaks at up to 20.1 amps depending on the cooling unit selected, which means the cabinet should be on a dedicated 20-amp circuit to avoid tripping a standard 15-amp breaker when the compressor cycles on.
  • CellarPro 1800QTL / QT / XT variants: These designate three different compressor configurations available for this cabinet; the QTL draws the lowest startup current (14.2 amps) and is the quietest option, making it the preferred choice for installations in living spaces or finished rooms.

Placement Requirements

PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

POWER REQUIREMENT:
The power cord extends 6 1/2 feet from the rear of the cabinet. If an extension cord is used, it should be 14-gauge wire or thicker, grounded, and as short as possible.

The cooling unit plugs into a standard grounded wall outlet. We recommend adding a surge protector, rated at 15 amps or more (for example, click here), to protect the cooling unit from power surges.

The outlet must be on a dedicated circuit. The components of the cooling unit draw 3 amps, and the electric outlet on the side of the cooling unit also is rated for 3 amps. The cooling unit should not, under any circumstances, share a circuit with another motor or compressor-based appliance, like a wine cooler, fridge, air conditioner, or garage opener.

FLOOR SURFACE
Because of the significant weight of your wine cabinet, it is important that it be placed on a hard surface; otherwise, the cabinet may become skewed if the doors settle unevenly over time. If you will be placing your cabinet on thick carpeting, consider placing a carpet board underneath the wine cabinet. You can purchase a carpet board from Le Cache, or you can have your local hardware store cut a 3/4 inch plywood board to the following dimensions: 45w x 25d (inches).

DOOR SWING CLEARANCE
The doors of our wine cabinets swing wide by approximately 1 inch when open at 90 degrees. The additional width should be accounted for when purchasing cabinets that do not have moldings because the stated widths of our wine cabinets do not account for the door swing. Please note that the additional width is required in front of the cabinet.

WEIGHT LOAD FACTOR
After loading your wine cabinet with wine bottles, it will be extremely heavy. When selecting a location for your cabinet, make sure that the floor underneath is strong enough to support the weight of the cabinet.

TEMPERATURE REQUIREMENTS
CellarPro cooling units are designed to handle temperatures ranging from 50 to 95F.

VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS
The cooling unit generates hot air that must be exhausted in such a way that it won't be recirculated by the cooling unit. If the hot air cannot be dissipated or channeled properly, and the cooling unit is forced to recycle its own hot air, the cooling unit will be unable to maintain cold temperatures inside the wine cabinet and/or will overheat and/or will run all the time. Proper ventilation can be achieved in one of three ways:

  • 1. UPRIGHT CABINETS WITH TOP-VENT CONFIGURATIONS
Our upright wine cabinets have been engineered with top-vent cooling units and SB/0 Technology so that they can be placed right up against the wall. In this configuration, the hot air generated by the cooling unit is ventilated through the top of the wine cabinet, and the return air comes from above the wine cabinet, so there must be clearance above and to the sides of the cabinets for the hot air to dissipate, as follows:
    • Contemporary wine cabinets, Carolina wine cabinets, Loft wine cabinets, Vault wine cabinets and a Semi-Custom wine cabinets require 18 inches of clearance above the wine cabinet.
    • European Country wine cabinets and Mission wine cabinets require 12 inches of clearance above the wine cabinet.
    • The sides always need to be open - in other words, placement in a corner, enclosed space, alcove, or closet will not work without our front-vent hood (see Configuration 3 below).
  • 2. UPRIGHT CABINETS WITH Rear-Vent Configurations
Our upright wine cabinets can be configured so that the return air comes from behind the wine cabinet. This configuration is useful in situations where sufficient clearance around the wine cabinet doesn't exist. In this configuration:
    • If the rear of the wine cabinet is not accessible, a minimum clearance of 7 1/2 inches above the wine cabinet is required for removal and replacement of the cooling unit air filter.
    • If the rear of the wine cabinet is accessible, a minimum clearance of 3 inches above the wine cabinet is required for proper airflow, and we recommend using our air deflector to direct the hot air exhaust to the left of the wine cabinet.
    • In all cases, the wine cabinet must be placed 3-4 inches away from the rear wall.
    • The sides always need to be open - in other words, placement in a corner, enclosed space, alcove, or closet will not work without our front-vent hood (see Configuration 3 below).
  • 3. UPRIGHT CABINETS with Front-Vent Hoods
If you want to place the wine cabinet flush against the wall but you don't have the required clearance (as outlined in Configuration 1 above), or you want to place the wine cabinet in an enclosed space, closet, or alcove, our front-vent hood (placed on top of the wine cabinet) can be used with 7 1/2 inches of clearance above the wine cabinet for removal of the hood and the air filter. Please note:
    • Contemporary wine cabinets, Loft wine cabinets and Vault wine cabinets can use our front vent hood with OR without the decorative grill.
    • European Country wine cabinets, Mission wine cabinets and Carolina wine cabinets can use our front vent hood without the decorative grill (the decorative grill will not fit with crown moldings).

4. CREDENZA WINE CABINETS
Credenza wine cabinets don't require any clearance above the wine cabinet; however, all credenzas require 3-4 inches of space behind the wine cabinet because all the ventilation (intake and exhaust) occurs behind the cabinet.

Please note:
(1) We count the top of the racks as 1 row when counting rows in our racks.
(2) Every slot in the racks is 3 3/4" and sized to fit oversized Burgundy and most Champagne-size bottles.
(3) Bulk storage is located atop the racks (except for the first row atop the racks). Bulk storage capacity is based on Bordeaux-size bottles.
(4) Total capacity is the sum of racked plus bulk capacity, with double-deep storage in all cases except the Contemporary Credenza (which is single-deep). Usable capacity may be lower by 2-3 bottles when the first few cells under the cooling unit are left empty for proper air circulation.

Q&A

Can the Le Cache 1400 go flush against a wall, or does it need clearance on the sides and back?

A: The 1400 uses Le Cache’s SB/0 Technology with top-vent exhaust, which means it exhausts heat through the top of the cabinet rather than the rear or sides. That design allows it to sit completely flush against a wall with no side or rear clearance required — making it a practical choice for apartments, dining rooms or any space where you can’t recess a unit into cabinetry. It is a freestanding cabinet, not a true built-in, but the top-vent configuration removes the ventilation constraints that limit most freestanding coolers.

What are the electrical requirements, and will it run on a standard household circuit?

A: The 1400 runs on 115V AC / 60 Hz, which is a standard North American outlet. Startup amp draw depends on which CellarPro 1800-series cooling unit is installed: the 1800QTL-ECX draws 2.4A running / 14.2A at startup, the 1800QT-ECX draws 2.9A running / 20.1A at startup, and the 1800XT-ECX draws 3.0A running / 20.1A at startup. The high startup draw is typical of compressor-based systems — a dedicated 20-amp circuit is the safest approach to avoid tripping a shared breaker, particularly with the QT or XT units.

Does the 1400 actually control humidity, or just temperature?

A: It controls both. The cabinet includes adjustable humidity control managed through the CellarPro cooling unit — a meaningful distinction from wine coolers and standard refrigerators, which only regulate temperature and allow humidity to fluctuate in ways that dry out corks over time. For collections intended for long-term aging, humidity management is what separates a true wine cabinet from a beverage refrigerator.

Will the racking fit oversized bottles like large-format Burgundy or heavier Napa Cabernets?

A: The all-wood interlock racks are universal by design and accommodate oversized bottles. Racked slots are spaced at 3.8 inches and the double-deep configuration provides 160 individual racked slots plus bulk space for approximately 12 additional bottles stacked. Heavy-shouldered Bordeaux-style bottles and wider Burgundy shapes fit without modification — no need to remove or swap shelving.

What warranty does the 1400 come with, and what does it actually cover?

A: Le Cache provides a 2-year warranty on the entire cabinet and a separate 5-year warranty specifically on the CellarPro cooling unit. The longer coverage on the cooling system reflects that the compressor and electronics are the most mechanically demanding components. An optional extended warranty is also available for buyers who want longer-term coverage beyond the standard terms.

What cooling unit options are available, and how do they differ?

A: The 1400 is available with three CellarPro 1800-series ECX cooling units: the 1800QTL-ECX (lowest running amperage at 2.4A, quietest option), the 1800QT-ECX (2.9A running), and the 1800XT-ECX (3.0A running, highest cooling capacity). All three are made in the USA and include digital temperature and humidity control, Energy-Saver and Quick-Chill modes and audible and visual alarms. The QTL is the right choice for most living space installations where noise is a concern; the XT suits warmer ambient environments where greater thermal load capacity is needed.

Love the driftwood wine refrigerator!!

by

Just received my beautiful wine cabinet. I love the Driftwood color and the overall design. It holds 160 bottles which is perfect. I have it in my living room and it is very quiet. Looks like a beautiful piece of furniture. Great purchase. Expensive but worth the price.
