Details

When a collection outgrows a cooler but a full cellar buildout isn't in the plan, the Le Cache Contemporary 3800 in Driftwood is the answer. At 458-bottle capacity across double-deep all-wood racking and bulk storage, it functions as a true aging environment — not a refrigerator — with CellarPro's active humidity and temperature management keeping conditions stable for long-term cellaring of Bordeaux, Burgundy and anything else worth waiting on. The Driftwood finish on cherry veneer reads as a weathered, neutral tone that integrates cleanly into modern, Craftsman or transitional interiors without demanding attention.

What separates this cabinet from a wine cooler is its thermal architecture. Foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation, sealed seams and double-pane tinted glass hold temperature without the swings that damage corks and accelerate aging. The CellarPro cooling unit — US-made, top-vented and mounted inside the cabinet — handles both temperature and humidity independently, with a digital display, Energy-Saver and Quick-Chill modes, audible and visual alarms, and an optional bottle probe for precise monitoring. SB/0™ technology means the unit exhausts through the top rather than the rear, so it sits flush against the wall with no clearance gap required. The 408 racked slots run at 3.8-inch spacing, accommodating oversized formats, and the remaining ~50-bottle bulk section handles cases in transition.

Best For

  • Transitioning a collection of 200+ bottles out of a temperature-inconsistent closet or garage into a dedicated aging environment
  • Placing a large-format cabinet in a dining room or finished basement where rear-exhaust clearance is unavailable
  • Collectors aging structured reds across multiple appellations who need reliable humidity control alongside temperature precision
  • Furnishing a second home where the cabinet needs to hold its own visually without a custom built-in installation

Features

  • High-capacity storage: Accommodates up to 458 bottles, with 408 in individual racked slots and approximately 50 in bulk storage.
  • CellarPro cooling system: Made in the USA, this unit provides precise digital temperature and adjustable humidity control to maintain aging conditions.
  • Zero-clearance installation: SB/0 technology and top-vent exhaust allow the cabinet to be placed flush against the wall.
  • Universal racking: All-wood interlock racks feature 3 3/4-inch slots designed to fit oversized bottles alongside standard 750ml sizes.
  • Thermal and UV protection: Constructed with foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation and double-pane tinted glass doors.
  • Advanced monitoring: Includes audible and visual alarms, energy-saver modes and quick-chill settings.
  • Hardwood doors and furniture trim with a driftwood finish.
  • Integrated security lock and stainless bar pulls.

Pairs Well With

  • A bottle probe: Connects to the cooling unit to measure liquid temperature rather than air temperature for more precise cycling.

Placement Requirements

PLACEMENT & VENTILATION

Before choosing a location for your Le Cache wine cabinet, make sure the installation meets the following requirements.

BASIC PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Power: Standard grounded outlet on a dedicated circuit
  • Room Temperature: 50–95°F
  • Floor: Hard, level surface capable of supporting the fully loaded cabinet
  • Door Clearance: Allow approximately 1 inch of additional width in front of the cabinet for the doors to open 90°
  • Ventilation: Requirements vary depending on the cabinet and cooling configuration

VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS

Proper ventilation is essential. The cooling unit exhausts warm air, which must be able to dissipate without being drawn back into the unit. Poor ventilation can prevent the cabinet from reaching the desired temperature and may cause the cooling unit to overheat or run continuously.

SUMMARY

Configuration Minimum Clearance Behind Minimum Clearance Above Open Sides Required? Suitable for Alcove?
Upright Cabinet / Top-Vented — 12 inches or 18 inches Yes No
Upright Cabinet / Rear-Vented 3–4 inches 3 inches or 7 1/2 inches Yes No
Upright Cabinet / Top-Vented + Front-Vent Hood — 7 1/2 inches No Yes
Credenza 3–4 inches None required Yes No

1. UPRIGHT CABINET / TOP-VENTED

Our upright wine cabinets with top-vented cooling are designed so the cabinet can be placed directly against the rear wall.

Warm air exhausts through the top of the cabinet, while return air enters from above. Sufficient clearance above and around the cabinet is therefore required.

Minimum clearance above the cabinet:

  • 18 inches: Contemporary, Carolina, Loft, Vault and Semi-Custom wine cabinets
  • 12 inches: European Country, Mission and Gallery wine cabinets

Important: The sides of the cabinet must remain open so that warm air can dissipate. Top-vented upright cabinets should not be placed in a corner, enclosed space, alcove or closet unless a Front-Vent Hood is used.

2. UPRIGHT CABINET / REAR-VENTED

Upright wine cabinets can also be configured with rear-vented cooling, with return air entering from behind the cabinet. This configuration is useful when sufficient clearance above the cabinet is not available.

Requirements:

  • The cabinet must be positioned 3–4 inches away from the rear wall.
  • If the rear of the cabinet is not accessible, allow at least 7 1/2 inches above the cabinet so the cooling-unit air filter can be removed and replaced.
  • If the rear of the cabinet is accessible, allow at least 3 inches above the cabinet for airflow. We also recommend an air deflector to direct warm exhaust air to the left of the cabinet.

Important: The sides of the cabinet must remain open. Rear-vented upright cabinets should not be placed in a corner, enclosed space, alcove or closet unless a Front-Vent Hood is used.

3. UPRIGHT CABINET / TOP-VENTED + FRONT-VENT HOOD

A Front-Vent Hood can be added to a top-vented upright cabinet when:

  • The cabinet will be placed flush against the rear wall but does not have the required clearance above for a standard top-vented installation
  • The cabinet will be installed in an alcove, closet or other enclosed space

Allow at least 7 1/2 inches above the cabinet for removal of the hood and air filter.

Compatibility:

  • Contemporary, Loft and Vault: The Front-Vent Hood may be used with or without the decorative grille.
  • European Country, Mission, Carolina and Gallery: The Front-Vent Hood may be used without the decorative grille. The grille will not fit with the crown moldings.

4. CREDENZA

Credenzas do not require clearance above the cabinet; however, because both intake and exhaust ventilation occur behind the cabinet, credenzas require 3–4 inches of clearance behind the cabinet, and the sides must remain open for proper ventilation.

POWER REQUIREMENTS

The cooling unit plugs into a standard grounded wall outlet. The power cord extends approximately 6 1/2 feet from the rear of the cabinet.

The outlet must be on a dedicated circuit. The cooling unit components draw 3 amps, and the electrical outlet on the side of the cooling unit is also rated for 3 amps.

Do not share the circuit with another motor- or compressor-driven appliance such as a refrigerator, wine cooler, air conditioner or garage door opener.

We recommend using a surge protector rated for at least 15 amps to protect the cooling unit from power surges.

If an extension cord is necessary, use a grounded cord with 14-gauge wire or heavier, and keep it as short as possible.

FLOOR & WEIGHT REQUIREMENTS

A fully loaded wine cabinet is extremely heavy. Make sure the floor can support the combined weight of the cabinet and wine.

The cabinet should also be placed on a hard, level surface. On thick carpeting, the cabinet may settle unevenly over time, which can affect door alignment.

If installing on thick carpet, place a carpet board beneath the cabinet. You may purchase one from Le Cache or have a local hardware store cut a 3/4-inch plywood board to the width x depth of the cabinet.

DOOR SWING CLEARANCE

When opened to 90 degrees, the doors extend approximately 1 inch beyond the width of the cabinet.

For cabinets without moldings, allow for this additional space when planning the installation. The extra clearance is required in front of the cabinet for the doors to open fully.

Please note:
(1) We count the top of the racks as 1 row when counting rows in our racks.
(2) Every slot in the racks is 3 3/4" and sized to fit oversized Burgundy and most Champagne-size bottles.
(3) Bulk storage is located atop the racks (except for the first row atop the racks). Bulk storage capacity is based on Bordeaux-size bottles.
(4) Total capacity is the sum of racked plus bulk capacity, with double-deep storage in all cases except the Contemporary Credenza (which is single-deep). Usable capacity may be lower by 2-3 bottles when the first few cells under the cooling unit are left empty for proper air circulation.

Q&A

What is the actual bottle capacity and will it fit larger Champagne or Pinot Noir bottles?

A: The Model 3800 has a total capacity of 458 bottles which includes 408 racked slots and approximately 50 bottles in bulk storage. The universal all-wood interlock racks feature 3.8-inch slots designed to accommodate oversized bottles like Champagne and Pinot Noir without scraping labels.

Can this wine cabinet be placed directly against a wall?

A: Yes. This unit features SB/0 technology and a top-vent exhaust system which allows the cabinet to be placed flush against a rear wall. You do not need to leave extra clearance behind the unit for ventilation as the hot air is exhausted through the top.

How loud is the cooling system during operation?

A: This cabinet is equipped with CellarPro cooling units which are known for quiet operation. If noise is a primary concern for a living area or dining room you can select the 1800QTL-ECX model which is the quietest option available.

Does the cabinet manage humidity levels or just temperature?

A: Unlike standard wine refrigerators this cabinet provides both digital temperature control and adjustable humidity control. It uses foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation and sealed seams to maintain the stable environment necessary for long-term aging of fine wine collections.

What are the electrical requirements for installation?

A: The cabinet runs on a standard 115V AC / 60 Hz circuit. Depending on the specific CellarPro cooling unit selected the running amps range from 2.4 to 3.0 Amps while startup amps can reach up to 20.1 Amps.

What kind of warranty coverage is included?

A: Le Cache provides a 5-year warranty on the CellarPro cooling system and a 2-year warranty on the entire cabinet structure. There is also an option to purchase an extended warranty for additional long-term protection of your investment.

Good product, lousy delivery company.

Love the unit. Looks good and works well. Fits our lifestyle perfectly. The quality and utility more than make up for the abysmal performance of the delivery truck company.
