Total Capacity: 172 bottles
Size: 31w x 29d x 72h (in)

Details

For a collector whose wines deserve better than a closet conversion or an undercounter cooler, the Le Cache Contemporary 1400 in Chocolate Cherry is a serious, freestanding aging cabinet sized for real-life spaces. At 31 inches wide and 72 inches tall, it holds 172 bottles — 160 in individual racked slots wide enough for oversized Burgundy and Rhône bottles — while the CellarPro cooling system actively manages both temperature and humidity, the two conditions that actually determine whether a wine ages gracefully or deteriorates. This is a meaningful distinction: wine coolers and refrigerators hold temperature but ignore humidity, making them unsuitable for anything you plan to keep longer than a few months.

The Chocolate Cherry finish is a deep, furniture-grade veneer that reads as a built-in piece rather than an appliance — it integrates into a dining room, a study or a finished basement without announcing itself. The double-pane tinted glass and foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation provide genuine thermal and UV protection, not just a viewing window. SB/0 technology means the cabinet can sit flush against a wall, which matters in the kind of compact, well-appointed rooms this unit is designed for. The CellarPro unit exhausts through the top, is built in the USA and carries a five-year warranty — a longer coverage period than most competing cooling systems offer.

What These Specs Mean

  • Running vs. Startup Amps: The compressor draws far more current at startup than during steady operation — up to 20.1 Amps at startup versus 2.4–3.0 Amps running. This determines whether a standard 15-amp circuit is sufficient or whether a dedicated 20-amp circuit is required.
  • CellarPro 1800QTL-ECX vs. 1800QT-ECX / 1800XT-ECX: The QTL model has the lowest startup draw (14.2 Amps), which may allow installation on an existing 15-amp circuit in some configurations; the QT and XT models reach 20.1 Amps at startup and typically require a dedicated 20-amp circuit.
  • Double Deep Storage: Bottles are racked two rows deep per slot, maximizing capacity within the cabinet footprint but requiring partial unloading to access bottles stored in the rear row.

Placement Requirements

PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

POWER REQUIREMENT:
The power cord extends 6 1/2 feet from the rear of the cabinet. If an extension cord is used, it should be 14-gauge wire or thicker, grounded, and as short as possible.

The cooling unit plugs into a standard grounded wall outlet. We recommend adding a surge protector, rated at 15 amps or more (for example, click here), to protect the cooling unit from power surges.

The outlet must be on a dedicated circuit. The components of the cooling unit draw 3 amps, and the electric outlet on the side of the cooling unit also is rated for 3 amps. The cooling unit should not, under any circumstances, share a circuit with another motor or compressor-based appliance, like a wine cooler, fridge, air conditioner, or garage opener.

FLOOR SURFACE
Because of the significant weight of your wine cabinet, it is important that it be placed on a hard surface; otherwise, the cabinet may become skewed if the doors settle unevenly over time. If you will be placing your cabinet on thick carpeting, consider placing a carpet board underneath the wine cabinet. You can purchase a carpet board from Le Cache, or you can have your local hardware store cut a 3/4 inch plywood board to the following dimensions: 45w x 25d (inches).

DOOR SWING CLEARANCE
The doors of our wine cabinets swing wide by approximately 1 inch when open at 90 degrees. The additional width should be accounted for when purchasing cabinets that do not have moldings because the stated widths of our wine cabinets do not account for the door swing. Please note that the additional width is required in front of the cabinet.

WEIGHT LOAD FACTOR
After loading your wine cabinet with wine bottles, it will be extremely heavy. When selecting a location for your cabinet, make sure that the floor underneath is strong enough to support the weight of the cabinet.

TEMPERATURE REQUIREMENTS
CellarPro cooling units are designed to handle temperatures ranging from 50 to 95F.

VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS
The cooling unit generates hot air that must be exhausted in such a way that it won't be recirculated by the cooling unit. If the hot air cannot be dissipated or channeled properly, and the cooling unit is forced to recycle its own hot air, the cooling unit will be unable to maintain cold temperatures inside the wine cabinet and/or will overheat and/or will run all the time. Proper ventilation can be achieved in one of three ways:

  • 1. UPRIGHT CABINETS WITH TOP-VENT CONFIGURATIONS
Our upright wine cabinets have been engineered with top-vent cooling units and SB/0 Technology so that they can be placed right up against the wall. In this configuration, the hot air generated by the cooling unit is ventilated through the top of the wine cabinet, and the return air comes from above the wine cabinet, so there must be clearance above and to the sides of the cabinets for the hot air to dissipate, as follows:
    • Contemporary wine cabinets, Carolina wine cabinets, Loft wine cabinets, Vault wine cabinets and a Semi-Custom wine cabinets require 18 inches of clearance above the wine cabinet.
    • European Country wine cabinets and Mission wine cabinets require 12 inches of clearance above the wine cabinet.
    • The sides always need to be open - in other words, placement in a corner, enclosed space, alcove, or closet will not work without our front-vent hood (see Configuration 3 below).
  • 2. UPRIGHT CABINETS WITH Rear-Vent Configurations
Our upright wine cabinets can be configured so that the return air comes from behind the wine cabinet. This configuration is useful in situations where sufficient clearance around the wine cabinet doesn't exist. In this configuration:
    • If the rear of the wine cabinet is not accessible, a minimum clearance of 7 1/2 inches above the wine cabinet is required for removal and replacement of the cooling unit air filter.
    • If the rear of the wine cabinet is accessible, a minimum clearance of 3 inches above the wine cabinet is required for proper airflow, and we recommend using our air deflector to direct the hot air exhaust to the left of the wine cabinet.
    • In all cases, the wine cabinet must be placed 3-4 inches away from the rear wall.
    • The sides always need to be open - in other words, placement in a corner, enclosed space, alcove, or closet will not work without our front-vent hood (see Configuration 3 below).
  • 3. UPRIGHT CABINETS with Front-Vent Hoods
If you want to place the wine cabinet flush against the wall but you don't have the required clearance (as outlined in Configuration 1 above), or you want to place the wine cabinet in an enclosed space, closet, or alcove, our front-vent hood (placed on top of the wine cabinet) can be used with 7 1/2 inches of clearance above the wine cabinet for removal of the hood and the air filter. Please note:
    • Contemporary wine cabinets, Loft wine cabinets and Vault wine cabinets can use our front vent hood with OR without the decorative grill.
    • European Country wine cabinets, Mission wine cabinets and Carolina wine cabinets can use our front vent hood without the decorative grill (the decorative grill will not fit with crown moldings).

4. CREDENZA WINE CABINETS
Credenza wine cabinets don't require any clearance above the wine cabinet; however, all credenzas require 3-4 inches of space behind the wine cabinet because all the ventilation (intake and exhaust) occurs behind the cabinet.

Please note:
(1) We count the top of the racks as 1 row when counting rows in our racks.
(2) Every slot in the racks is 3 3/4" and sized to fit oversized Burgundy and most Champagne-size bottles.
(3) Bulk storage is located atop the racks (except for the first row atop the racks). Bulk storage capacity is based on Bordeaux-size bottles.
(4) Total capacity is the sum of racked plus bulk capacity, with double-deep storage in all cases except the Contemporary Credenza (which is single-deep). Usable capacity may be lower by 2-3 bottles when the first few cells under the cooling unit are left empty for proper air circulation.

Q&A

Can the Le Cache 1400 be placed flush against a wall, or does it need clearance behind it?

A: The 1400 uses Le Cache’s SB/0 (flush-to-wall) technology combined with a top-vent exhaust, meaning no rear clearance is required. Heat exits through the top of the cabinet, so it can sit directly against a wall. This makes it well-suited for apartments, finished basements or any space where freestanding placement against a wall is the only option.

Will the racking actually fit oversized Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne bottles?

A: Yes. The all-wood interlock racks feature 3.8-inch slots and are described as universal racking designed to accommodate oversized bottles. The cabinet holds 160 bottles in racked slots plus approximately 12 bottles in bulk stacked storage, for a total of 172 bottles. If your collection skews toward larger-format Burgundy or Champagne bottles, plan capacity conservatively since those formats displace more than one standard slot.

What are the electrical requirements, and do I need a dedicated circuit?

A: The cabinet runs on 115V AC / 60 Hz standard household current. Startup amp draw depends on which CellarPro cooling unit is selected: the 1800QTL-ECX pulls 14.2 startup amps, while both the 1800QT-ECX and 1800XT-ECX reach 20.1 startup amps. Running amps are modest (2.4–3.0A), but the startup spike means a dedicated 20-amp circuit is strongly recommended, particularly for the QT and XT variants, to avoid tripping shared breakers.

Does this cabinet actively control humidity, or just temperature?

A: Unlike wine coolers or standard refrigerators, the 1400 includes active, adjustable humidity control through the CellarPro cooling unit. This is a critical distinction for long-term aging: sustained low humidity dries out corks and accelerates oxidation. The cabinet also uses foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation and sealed seams to limit moisture exchange with the ambient environment, helping maintain stable cellar-level humidity year-round.

What warranty does the Le Cache 1400 carry, and what does each part cover?

A: The cabinet comes with a 2-year warranty covering the full cabinet and a separate 5-year warranty covering the CellarPro cooling unit. An optional extended warranty is also available for purchase. The cooling unit warranty is notably longer than most competitors’ compressor coverage, which reflects the fact that the CellarPro units are manufactured in the USA and designed specifically for wine storage environments rather than adapted from general refrigeration components.

What does the insulation and glass construction actually do for wine aging versus a standard wine cooler?

A: The 1400 uses foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation throughout the cabinet body — a higher-performance closed-cell foam compared to the fiberglass or minimal insulation found in most wine coolers. The door features double-pane tinted glass that reduces both thermal transfer and UV exposure. Together these reduce the thermal load on the cooling unit, produce more stable internal temperatures during ambient swings and protect wine from light degradation. A standard wine cooler or refrigerator does none of this at the same level, which is why Le Cache specifically positions these cabinets as suitable for long-term aging rather than short-term chilling.

I just wanted to drop you a line and let you know how pleased my wife and I are with our Le Cache Wine Cooler.

I was pleasantly surprised on the quality of the workmanship of the cabinet and of the operation of the cooler itself.

It is about 3/4 full of wine right now and is doing a fine job.

You guaranteed I would be pleased with our purchase and you were right.

Beautiful Piece of Furniture

The quality and craftmanship of the wine cabinet is superb, beautiful piece of furniture.

A little more follow up on a purchased cabinet would be nice. Meaning, either sending me an email or phone call to let me know of the shipping schedule.
