Transtherm Double Castel Glass Door Black #16308
Overview
Unlike most other cellars, Transtherm cellars are equipped for both cooling and heating - perfect for use in colder climates or regions with a wide variation in seasonal temperatures.
Details
When a collection spanning Bordeaux, Burgundy and Napa has outgrown a single-zone cooler, the Transtherm Double Castel is the logical answer. Two fully independent Castel units share one footprint and one black glass-door facade, but each side operates on its own thermostat — so you can run one at long-term aging temperatures while the other holds whites and Champagne ready to pour. The integrated heating element is what separates this from most freestanding options: it runs reliably in unconditioned environments from 32 to 95°F, which makes it a genuine option for a finished garage, a basement that sees cold winters or a second home that sits empty for months at a time.
Each side delivers three distinct temperature zones — long-term aging at 50–70°F in the main compartment, red wine service at 62–64°F in the middle section and a chilling zone at 43–47°F at the bottom for whites and sparkling. The thermal pump, a Transtherm exclusive, recycles condensation rather than expelling it, keeping internal humidity between 55 and 80 percent without any intervention. Slow, balanced compressors are physically disassociated from the cabinet body to eliminate vibration at the bottle level — not just reduced, eliminated. At 37 dBA, it is quiet enough for a dining room or open-plan living space. The aluminum interior (replacing the older thermoformed polystyrene lining) is paired with 4.5cm high-density foam insulation, and the adjustable rolling shelves handle Burgundy, Bordeaux and oversized formats without modification.
Best For
- Aging a mixed cellar of reds at 55°F on one side while keeping a case of Champagne and white Burgundy chilled and ready on the other
- Installing in an unconditioned garage or basement where seasonal temperatures swing well below or above the range most wine cabinets can handle
- A collection that has crossed 300 bottles and needs room to grow — the Double Castel holds up to 418 bottles at maximum shelf configuration
- Placing in a dining room or open living area where compressor noise and vibration would otherwise be a concern

What These Specs Mean
- 2 x 15-Amp Dedicated Circuits: Each cabinet unit draws enough current to require its own dedicated line — sharing a circuit with other appliances can trip breakers, so two separate dedicated runs need to be in place before installation.
- Split Warranty (1-Year Parts & Labor / 5-Year Compressor): The compressor is the most costly component to replace; the extended 5-year coverage means the core cooling mechanism is protected well beyond the standard labor term.
Q&A
How loud is the Double Castel, and can it realistically be placed in a dining room or living space?
A: The Double Castel operates at 37 dBA — roughly the ambient noise level of a quiet library. That result comes from slow, balanced compressors that are mechanically disassociated from the cabinet body, which also eliminates vibration transmission to your bottles. It is a freestanding unit (not designed for built-in installation), so it needs 4 inches of clearance behind the cabinet, but it is genuinely quiet enough for finished living spaces.
What are the three temperature zones, and what temperatures do they actually hold?
A: Each of the two cabinet sides runs three independent zones. Zone 1 is the large main compartment for long-term storage and aging, targeting 50–70°F. Zone 2 holds red wine at serving temperature, 62–64°F. Zone 3 is a chilling compartment for whites and sparkling wine at 43–47°F. The electronic regulation system limits internal temperature swing to a maximum of 2–3°F. Because both sides are independently controlled, you can run one side for long-term cellaring and the other entirely as a service cabinet — or split each side for mixed use.
What are the electrical requirements, and does this need a dedicated circuit?
A: Yes — the Double Castel requires two dedicated 15-amp circuits at 120V / 60Hz, one for each cabinet unit. If you are remodeling or finishing a space for this unit, plan for that wiring before installation. A single shared circuit is not sufficient.
How many bottles does it actually hold, and how does shelving configuration affect that number?
A: As shipped, each side comes with 3 rolling shelves (12 bottles each) and 3 fixed storage shelves (up to 77 bottles each), giving 190 bottles per side and 380 bottles total. Maximum capacity per side is 209 bottles (418 total). You can add rolling shelves up to a maximum of 14 per side, though capacity decreases as shelves are added since rolling shelves hold fewer bottles than the large fixed shelves. When using the 3 fixed shelves, up to 9 rolling shelves per side can be used simultaneously. The low-profile grooved rolling shelves accommodate all standard bottle formats including Burgundy and Champagne shapes.
Can this cabinet operate in a garage, basement or unconditioned space?
A: Yes. The integrated heating element is what separates Transtherm from most competing cabinets — it allows the Double Castel to function in ambient environments as cold as 32°F and as warm as 95°F. Most wine coolers only have a cooling function and fail when the surrounding temperature drops below 50°F. The built-in thermal pump also actively manages internal humidity, maintaining 55%–80% relative humidity regardless of the installation environment, without requiring a separate humidifier.
What does the warranty cover and for how long?
A: The Double Castel carries a 1-year limited warranty covering parts and labor, plus a separate 5-year limited warranty on the compressor. The extended compressor coverage is meaningful given that the compressor is the component most likely to require attention over a long ownership cycle.
