Overview

Unlike most other cellars, Transtherm cellars are equipped for both cooling and heating - perfect for use in colder climates or regions with a wide variation in seasonal temperatures.

Details

The Double Ermitage is Transtherm’s answer to a collection that has grown too large and too varied for a single-zone cabinet. Two full-size Ermitage units share a common frame and a combined footprint of roughly 53 inches wide, but each side operates as an independent zone — one can hold long-term aging stock at cellar temperature while the other keeps whites and Champagne ready for service. Temperature holds within 2–3°F of the set point across a range of 43–64°F, and the built-in thermal pump maintains humidity between 55% and 80% without manual intervention.

What separates Transtherm from most wine cabinet brands is the integrated heating element. The Ermitage operates in ambient environments from 32 to 95°F — an unconditioned basement, a garage or a second home with wide seasonal swings won’t compromise your collection. The compressors are mechanically decoupled from the cabinet body, keeping operation near-silent at 37 dBA and eliminating the low-frequency vibration that disturbs sediment in aged reds. The aluminum interior shelving system includes low-profile rolling shelves that accommodate Burgundy and Champagne bottles without forced reconfiguration, and the system scales up to 14 rolling shelves per side as the collection grows.

Best For

  • Running long-term aging stock — Bordeaux, Rhône or Napa Cabernet — on one side and service-ready whites or Champagne on the other at separate set points
  • Installing in an unconditioned basement, garage or second home where ambient temperatures vary significantly by season
  • Building a 400+ bottle home cellar in a single freestanding footprint without giving up independent zone control
  • Collectors who want built-in humidity management and temperature alarms rather than relying on a separate monitoring system

Q&A

Does the Double Ermitage have two truly independent temperature zones, and what range does each side hold?

A: Yes — each of the two side-by-side cabinets operates as its own independent temperature zone controlled by a dedicated digital thermostat. Each zone maintains temperatures from 43°F to 64°F at 55%–80% relative humidity, making it straightforward to dedicate one side to long-term storage (say, 55°F for Bordeaux or Burgundy) and the other to a cooler serving temperature for whites or Champagne. The maximum internal temperature variation is 2–3°F, which is tighter than most residential units.

What are the electrical requirements, and will this need dedicated circuits?

A: The Double Ermitage runs on 120V / 60Hz and requires two separate 15-Amp dedicated circuits — one per cabinet. Standard household circuits shared with other appliances will not work. Plan for an electrician to run two dedicated lines before delivery if your space doesn’t already have them. Single Ermitage units require only one 15-Amp circuit, so doubling the cabinet doubles the electrical demand.

Is this a freestanding unit, or can it be recessed into cabinetry as a built-in?

A: This is a freestanding unit. It requires 4 inches of clearance behind the cabinet for proper ventilation and cannot be fully recessed or enclosed on the back. The glass doors are reversible, giving you flexibility on which side opens toward a wall or aisle, but built-in flush installation is not supported by this model.

How loud is this cabinet — is it realistic in a dining room or open living space?

A: The Double Ermitage is rated at 37 dBA, which is quieter than a typical household refrigerator (around 40–45 dBA). Transtherm achieves this through slow, balanced compressors that are mechanically disassociated from the cabinet body, eliminating the vibration hum that cheaper units transmit through the frame. In a furnished dining room or study, it is unlikely to be noticeable during normal conversation.

How does the 430-bottle capacity actually break down, and will it fit Burgundy or Champagne bottles?

A: Each side holds 215 bottles in the standard configuration: 3 adjustable rolling shelves at 12 bottles each and 3 fixed storage shelves holding up to 77 bottles on the largest shelf (see shelf diagram for exact row counts of 44, 44 and 77). The rolling shelves use low-profile grooves designed to accommodate all standard bottle shapes including larger-diameter Burgundy and Champagne bottles. If you add rolling shelves beyond the standard 3, total capacity per side decreases; a maximum of 14 rolling shelves per side is supported, or up to 9 rolling shelves when using 3 fixed shelves.

What warranty comes with this cabinet, and what does it actually cover?

A: Transtherm backs the Double Ermitage with a 1-year limited warranty covering parts and labor and a separate 5-year limited warranty on the compressor. The compressor coverage is the more meaningful figure for a long-term investment — compressor failure is the most expensive repair on any wine cabinet, and five years of manufacturer coverage provides real protection on a unit at this price point.
