Details

When a collection has grown past the point where a kitchen cooler or repurposed closet makes sense, the Le Cache Semi-Custom Standard is the kind of cabinet that earns serious consideration. At 58 inches wide and 85 inches tall, it holds up to 204 bottles in a hardwood-framed enclosure that can be finished in six stains — from Unstained and Driftwood to Coffee, Mahogany, Chestnut or Black Lacquer — so it reads as furniture in a dining room, study or finished basement rather than appliance. The CellarPro 1800H Houdini cooling unit runs at 49 decibels on its low fan setting, which matters if the cabinet is in a living space where silence is expected.

The triple-deep metal racking keeps labels facing forward and visible through the double-pane glass doors and glass side panels, so finding a specific bottle doesn’t mean pulling half the rack. Two bulk storage bays at the floor accommodate case boxes for wines you’re laying down and haven’t racked yet. Semi-custom means you choose the finish, racking finish and hardware at order time, and the cabinet ships faster and at a lower price than a fully custom build — without giving up locks, LED interior lighting or the crown and base molding that make it look at home in a finished room.

  • Finishing a dining room or home office remodel where the cabinet needs to match existing millwork rather than stand apart from it

  • Laying down case purchases alongside your racked bottles in the same controlled environment

Placement Requirements

PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

POWER REQUIREMENT:
The power cord extends 6 1/2 feet from the rear of the cabinet. If an extension cord is used, it should be 14-gauge wire or thicker, grounded, and as short as possible.

The cooling unit plugs into a standard grounded wall outlet. We recommend adding a surge protector, rated at 15 amps or more (for example, click here), to protect the cooling unit from power surges.

The outlet must be on a dedicated circuit. The components of the cooling unit draw 3 amps, and the electric outlet on the side of the cooling unit also is rated for 3 amps. The cooling unit should not, under any circumstances, share a circuit with another motor or compressor-based appliance, like a wine cooler, fridge, air conditioner or garage opener.

FLOOR SURFACE:
Because of the significant weight of your wine cabinet, it is important that it be placed on a hard surface. Otherwise, the cabinet may become skewed if the doors settle unevenly over time. If you will be placing your cabinet on thick carpeting, consider placing a carpet board underneath the wine cabinet. You can purchase a carpet board from Le Cache, or you can have your local hardware store cut a 3/4 inch plywood board to the following dimensions: 69.5w x 25d

WEIGHT LOAD FACTOR:
After loading your wine cabinet with wine bottles, it will be extremely heavy. When selecting a location for your cabinet, make sure that the floor underneath is strong enough to support the weight of the cabinet.

TEMPERATURE REQUIREMENTS:
CellarPro cooling units are designed to handle temperatures ranging from 50 to 95F.

VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS:
The cooling unit generates hot air that must be exhausted in such a way that it won't be recirculated by the cooling unit. If the hot air cannot be dissipated or channeled properly, and the cooling unit is forced to recycle its own hot air, the cooling unit will be unable to maintain cold temperatures inside the wine cabinet and/or will overheat and/or will run all the time.

Proper ventilation can be achieved by ensuring that sufficient space exists above the cabinet, where the hot air generated by the cooling unit is exhausted. This is because the return air also comes from above the wine cabinet, so there must be sufficient space above and to the sides of the cabinets for the hot air exhaust to dissipate.

We recommend 18 inches of clearance above the wine cabinet, depending on the airflow conditions in that area. Also, note that the sides should be open to the left and the right of the cabinet. In other words, placement in a corner, enclosed space, alcove or closet is not advised.

Q&A

Is the Le Cache Semi-Custom Wine Cabinet #36756 freestanding or can it be recessed as a built-in?

A: This cabinet is freestanding. It stands on a base molding and is finished on all sides, including double-pane glass side panels, so it works as a standalone unit in a dining room, living space or finished basement. It is not designed to be recessed into cabinetry or used as a true built-in. At 58" wide x 19½" deep x 85" tall (without handles), it fits through a standard 36" doorway but will not clear a standard 32" opening without removing doors — factor that into placement planning.

How loud is the cooling unit at normal operating conditions?

A: The cabinet uses the CellarPro 1800H Houdini cooling unit, which features dual fan speed settings. At the low fan speed — the setting used during normal, steady-state operation — it runs at 49 decibels, roughly equivalent to a quiet conversation. The high fan speed delivers maximum cooling power when the cabinet is first loaded or ambient temperatures spike. For a dining room or living space installation, the low-speed operation is quiet enough that it won't dominate the room.

What is the actual bottle capacity, and how does the racking handle wider Burgundy bottles?

A: In the standard configuration, the cabinet holds 180 bottles on triple-deep metal racking plus bulk storage for 2 cases (24 bottles) on the floor of the cabinet — a total of 204 bottles when that floor space is used. With extended racks, the racked count itself reaches 204 bottles. The triple-deep metal racking accommodates standard Bordeaux-format bottles in all three positions. Wider Burgundy or Pinot-format bottles may reduce the per-row count in the deeper positions, so if your collection skews heavily toward large-format or high-shoulder Burgundy bottles, plan capacity conservatively at roughly 15–20% below the published maximum.

What wood finish options are available, and how do they coordinate with darker millwork?

A: Six exterior wood finish options are offered: Unstained, Black Lacquer, Chestnut, Coffee, Driftwood and Mahogany. For integration with dark walnut or espresso millwork, Coffee and Black Lacquer read closest in tone. Chestnut and Mahogany work well alongside warm cherry or medium-brown cabinetry. The semi-custom configuration also allows a choice of interior finish, racking finish and exterior hardware, so the cabinet can be tuned to match an existing room rather than retrofitted around it.

What does the warranty actually cover, and is there an extended option?

A: The cabinet shell carries a 1-year warranty. The CellarPro 1800H Houdini refrigeration system is covered for 2 years on the entire system and 5 years on the compressor specifically. An extended warranty for the cooling unit is available separately as item #31488. The compressor coverage is the figure that matters most for long-term aging use — compressor replacement is the single most expensive repair on any wine cabinet, and the 5-year coverage reflects confidence in the unit under sustained operation.

How long does it take to receive the cabinet after ordering?

A: Typical processing time is 2–3 weeks. This is faster than a fully custom Le Cache build, which is one of the practical advantages of the semi-custom program — you get the finish and racking choices without the extended lead times associated with fully bespoke configurations. Plan delivery logistics in advance given the cabinet's size and weight.
