Transtherm Castel Glass + Aluminum #17048
Overview
Unlike most other cellars, Transtherm cellars are equipped for both cooling and heating - perfect for use in colder climates or regions with a wide variation in seasonal temperatures.
Details
For a collection that has outgrown improvised storage and demands a real cellar environment, the Transtherm Castel is the cabinet to consider. Made in France by Eurocave, it runs three independent temperature zones — one large maturing compartment for long-term aging alongside two smaller sections dedicated to chilling whites and sparkling — so reds, whites and Champagne can all sit at their correct temperatures at the same time. What separates it from most cabinets at this tier is the integrated heating circuit: because it manages both heat and cold, it operates reliably in unconditioned spaces from 32 to 95°F, which opens up basement, garage and second-home installations that would disqualify a cooling-only unit.
The interior has been updated from thermoformed polystyrene to aluminum, and the shelving system is where the flexibility shows. Three rolling shelves (12 bottles each) and three fixed bulk-storage shelves hold up to 190 bottles in the standard configuration, with the option to add rolling shelves up to a maximum of 14. Low-profile shelf grooves accommodate bottles of varying diameters without adapters. The thermal pump — a Transtherm-exclusive system — recycles condensation to maintain humidity between 55–80%, while slow, balanced compressors that are mechanically isolated from the cabinet body keep vibration out of the equation. Operation measures 37 dBA, quiet enough for a dining room or living space. The glass door is reversible, and placement requires just 3 inches of clearance at the rear and 2 inches on the sides and top.
Best For
- Aging a mixed cellar of reds, whites and sparkling simultaneously at three distinct temperatures
- Installing a full-size cabinet in a garage, unfinished basement or unconditioned second home where ambient temperatures vary significantly across seasons
- Collectors building toward 150–200 bottles who want room to expand shelf configuration as the cellar grows
- Placing a large cabinet in a finished living space where compressor noise and vibration would otherwise be a concern

Specs & Resources
Brand: Transtherm
Size: 26 3/4w x 27 1/4d x 72h (in)
Weight: 252 lbs
Capacity: Up to 190 bottles
Material: Metal
Power/Rating:
120V / 60Hz; Requires 15-Amp Dedicated Circuit
Warranty:
1-Year Limited Warranty - Parts and Labor
5-Year Limited Warranty - Compressor
What These Specs Mean
- 15-Amp Dedicated Circuit: The cabinet cannot share a breaker with other appliances; a separate 15-amp circuit is required, which may involve electrical work prior to installation.
- Compressor Warranty vs. Parts and Labor Warranty: The compressor carries a longer 5-year coverage period than the 1-year general warranty, reflecting that the refrigeration system is the most mechanically complex and costly component to replace.

Q&A
Can the Transtherm Castel operate in a garage, basement, or unconditioned space?
A: Yes. The integrated heating element allows the Castel to function in ambient environments between 32 and 95°F, which means it can handle unheated garages, unfinished basements, or seasonal second homes where temperatures swing well outside the range most wine coolers can tolerate. Most cabinets only cool — this one actively heats as well. Plan for a 15-amp dedicated circuit and leave at least 3 inches of clearance behind the cabinet plus 2 inches on the sides and above for proper ventilation.
How loud is the Castel, and is it suitable for a dining room or living space?
A: The Castel operates at 37 dBA, which is on par with a quiet library or a soft whisper at close range — quieter than most residential wine coolers, which typically run 38–45 dBA. The low noise is a direct result of slow, balanced compressors that are physically disassociated from the cabinet body, which also eliminates bottle vibration. The unit is freestanding and requires the clearances noted above, so factor that into placement near seating or open-plan dining areas.
The specs say 190 bottles but also mention 209 — what is the actual capacity?
A: 190 bottles is the as-configured capacity using the included 3 adjustable rolling shelves (12 bottles per shelf) and 3 fixed storage shelves. The maximum of 209 bottles is achievable by modifying the shelving arrangement. Up to 14 rolling shelves can be installed in total, though capacity decreases as more rolling shelves are added. When the 3 fixed shelves are in place, a maximum of 9 rolling shelves can be used alongside them. Additional rolling shelves are available separately.
Is this cabinet freestanding or can it be built into cabinetry?
A: The Castel is a freestanding unit only. It requires 3 inches of clearance behind and 2 inches on each side and above for ventilation. It cannot be recessed flush into surrounding cabinetry without violating those clearance requirements, so built-in or undercounter installation is not supported by this model.
How does the 3-zone temperature system actually work?
A: The Castel has three distinct zones: one large main compartment for long-term aging and two smaller upper sections dedicated to serving white wine and sparkling wine at cooler temperatures. The electronic regulation system holds temperature variation to a maximum of 2–3°F within each zone. The display panel shows the maturing zone and serving zone temperatures simultaneously, and a Transtherm-exclusive thermal pump maintains interior humidity between 55–80% — critical for long-term cork integrity. Natural ventilation within the cabinet actively prevents mold and off-odors.
What does the warranty cover and for how long?
A: The Castel carries a 1-year limited warranty on parts and labor and a separate 5-year limited warranty on the compressor. The extended compressor coverage reflects the long-term reliability expectation for a cabinet at this price point and is one of the more meaningful specs to compare when evaluating it against competing brands.
