Troubleshooting

SYMPTOM

My cooling unit is icing up, and/or is making a loud clattering noise.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Good airflow for the cooling unit - inside and outside the wine cabinet - is essential to the performance of the wine cooling unit.

  • Outside the wine cabinet, if the coils are not cleaned periodically and/or airflow to the coils is restricted, the cooling unit will need to work extra hard to achieve the desired temperature inside the wine cabinet, and as a result may cause ice buildup.
  • Inside the wine cabinet, if bottles are placed directly below the cold airflow, the static pressure will may cause ice buidup.

The cooling unit also may ice up as it slowly loses refrigerant; however, once the refrigerant is gone, the ice buildup also will go away.

When ice builds up in the cooling unit, a loud clattering sound may occur as the fan blades strike the ice.

WHAT TO DO
  1. Unplug the cooling unit, and leave unplugged for at least 8 hours or overnight so that the ice can melt.

  2. Outside the wine cabinet (on top or behind), clean the coils on the back of the cooling unit and remove all items placed on top of the cabinet.

  3. Inside the wine cabinet, move any bottles that are placed directly below the airflow of the cooling unit.

  4. Once the ice has melted, drain the water. On the underside of the cooling unit about 3” back and 4” over from the right hand corner is a black drain plug. Rest a shallow dish or pie tin on the racks below the cooling unit, pull the plug, and drain out the melted water.

  5. Return drain-plug and restore power to the unit.

  6. Raise the temperature set-point to the full warm position (counter clockwise on manual thermostats, or 62 degrees on the digital display) for the first 24 hours. Lower the temperature incrementally over the next few days until the desired cabinet temperature is reached.

If the cooling unit continues to ice up, the cooling unit is losing its refrigerant. In this event, contact us at 1.877.532.2243 for further assistance.
